FLASH NOTES: Opening the 6A, Area 14 schedule, the defending area champion stood strong on a windy day at Bill Shelton Field with game time temperature in the upper 40s and a wind blowing to the East around 20 miles per hour.
Myers was on top of his game from the beginning. After an error was charged on a dropped fly ball off the bat of Jordan Bain for Fort Payne, Myers set the next nine Wildcat batters down.
He had a no-hitter going into the fourth that was broken on a single up the middle by catcher Jay Tyler Ellis.
At that time, Cullman had a 4-0 lead on two runs coming in the first and two more working their way home in the third.
Brennan Norton had a sacrifice fly that scored courtesy runner Brady Patterson in the first, followed by a single from Will Morrison, sending in Grayson Taylor who was hit by a pitch off right hander Dylan Wisner.
The Cullman lead was up to 4-0 in the third on a double by Morrison, scoring Taylor who doubled and a single from Peyton Colvard, getting Morrison home.
After allowing a single in the fourth to Ellis, Myers went back to work and got the next eight Wildcats out with little trouble. A double play ended the fourth with three pop outs in the fifth, two ground outs and a strikeout in the sixth.
Morrison singled home Cooper Beck and Brennan Norton in the fifth, extending the margin to 6-0.
Morrison would go three for three on the afternoon, driving in four runs and scoring once.
Dylon Wallace began the Cullman sixth with a single, then stole second and third, scampering home on a bunt single by Beck. The Bearcats ran the bases well, having six steals out of seven attempts in the game, led by Wallace with a couple.
Ellis had a single to open the Fort Payne seventh, his second hit against Myers. Myers then got a strikeout and a game ending 6-3 double play to complete the contest at 6:06 p.m.
Myers did not walk a batter, allowing two runners to get on base three times through two singles and an error.
The Bearcats got their first shutout since opening day when they blanked Fairhope 5-0 down in the Mobile area February 19.
Cullman bounced back from being shutout 5-0 last Saturday at home to the No.1 team from Class 7A, the Hoover Bucs.
