FLASH NOTES: Top ranked Hoover from Class 7A extended its winning streak to five games, taking down Cullman via shutout after they held off Grissom 7-3 at Bill Shelton Field early Saturday afternoon.
Pitching was the highlight of this game with Hoover allowing Cullman, one hit, a single in the fourth inning by Cooper Beck, from his lead off position in the lineup.
The visitors scored two in the second when Sonny Dichianna doubled, came in on a ground out with Max Garvey scoring when a balk was called against Beck while pitching to third baseman Preston Moore.
Moore is a former Fairview Aggie, who moved to the Hoover area last summer, heading into his senior season. Moore has committed to play next year at Samford University.
Down 2-0, Beck kept the Bucs from adding to their lead by retiring them in order during the third and getting out of trouble after he got two quick outs in the fourth.
Beck was relieved by Braxton Jones in the fifth. Jones hit two batters in the inning and walked two more. Cooper Bowen got the call from the bullpen, but gave up a two-out walk with the bases loaded and Hoover led 3-0.
Sam Sanford doubled off Bowen in the sixth as insurance runs were scored on a two-run homer by Peyton Wilson.
Elgin kept Cullman off balance by retiring the final 11 batters he faced after he allowed Beck's leadoff single to left in the fourth inning.
Cullman began the tripleheader at 11:00 a.m. defeating Grissom 10-3. That gave Brent Patterson's Bearcats three consecutive victories on the week.
Hoover was the first to defeat Cullman at Bill Shelton Field in four games on the young season.
In the last two weeks, the Bearcats have fallen to the No. 1 team from 6A in arch rival Hartselle 8-2 and suffer their second shutout of the season Saturday afternoon.
