FLASH NOTES: For the present time, the Hanceville Bulldogs are atop of the Cullman County basketball standings at 3-0, knocking the Fairview Aggies out of a first place tie with them Tuesday evening.
Hanceville plays three guards on a regular basis. In the fourth quarter, the guard play of Fred Ellis, Zeke McDonald and Ty Belmon accounted for 19 points. It was the most productive quarter for Stephen Chandler's squad as the broke open a tight contest with David Martin's Aggies.
Leading 41-35 entering the fourth, a field goal from Ellis pushed the Hanceville advantage to 47-37 with 5:33 remaining. A trey by Belmon sent the Bulldogs in double digits, leading 52-39 with 3:42 showing.
McDonald salted away the victory by scoring from the floor at 1:16 for a 58-41 lead, a steal and layup 10 seconds later to make it 60-41 and free throws at 0:58 as the lead grew to 62-41.
Ellis dropped in his fourth field goal of the period with 0:33 remaining and Hanceville had completed a solid effort, outscoring the Aggies 23-9 in the final 8:00.
The trio combined for 10 made shots in the fourth quarter.
New Fairview girls coach Justin Billings saw his Lady Aggies put together a very strong opening stanza in which they nailed a dozen shots, forced Hanceville into seven turnovers and zero points through the initial 4:00.
The Lady Aggies had all starters to score in the furious start, with a basket by Peyton Golden putting them on top 17-0 with 4:07 to go in the first. Hanceville's first basket came by Kierra Merriweather with 3:52 to play in the quarter.
By halftime, Fairview led 39-17 with 16 field goals going into the basket.
The scoring was reduced in the second half, but early in the fourth, a field goal from Manasco sent Fairview to a 52-22 advantage and a running clock the rest of the way.
Fairview is clicking at the present time with a four-game winning streak for the rookie coach. The Lady Aggies had defeated Holly Pond 50-36 on Monday evening and were playing at Joe Shults Gym for the first time since a 69-61 victory against Cold Springs on November 16.
The Lady Aggies are 3-0 in the county standings, a game ahead of West Point who is 2-0 in the early part of the county schedule.
