FLASH NOTES: Run-oriented Holly Pond made a statement on the game's first play by controlling the line of scrimmage and getting Holmes on the outside for a 62-yard touchdown run.
The Broncos were a team of big plays in the first half, accounting for 200 yards of total offense, all by the ground game. Holmes rambled for a 48-yard score early in the second then got a three-yard run to the end zone late in the quarter after Hanceville mishandled a Holly Pond punt at its five-yard line.
Romeal Simmons scored twice on impressive runs of 76 and 56 yards to spark Hanceville, but the Bulldogs were stymied by losing four possessions on fourth down plays in the second half, three consecutive times seeing a potential scoring march end in frustration.
Holly Pond produced three second half scores on TD drives of 69 and 60 yards in the third quarter and a 66-yard series during the final period.
The Broncos finished with 349 yards on the ground with Holmes ripping through the Bulldogs for 224 yards and three touchdowns. Rowell, Chaney and Stancil provided some punch to the running of Holmes with the Broncos enjoying a victory away from Holly Pond for the first time this season.
Hanceville suffered its seventh straight setback. The Bulldogs had 246 yards of offense, 10 first downs, were led by Simmons with 188 yards gained and two touchdowns.
This was the first game in a month for Holly Pond to get on the bus and travel in a short drive from campus down to Ray Talley Stadium. The Broncos are 4-1 at home this season and 1-1 now in games played on the road.
Fultondale manhandled Susan Moore 48-14 to go to 4-0 in the region standings. J.B. Pennington belted Vinemont 49-6 with the Tigers 4-1 and in second place. Locust Fork was idle from regional play as the Hornets are 3-1 with games left against Hanceville next week and Fultondale on the 27th.
The Broncos are 2-2 now after Friday's victory. Holly Pond host Fultondale next week and goes to Vinemont on the weekend of the 27th.
Susan Moore fell to 1-3 in losing to Fultondale while Vinemont visits Susan Moore next week and entertains Holly Pond the week after. The Eagles are 1-3 in the standings, not yet eliminated from the playoff picture.
