MYREX AND TEAM NORTH WIN HOOPS ALL-STAR ENCOUNTER:
At Spragins Hall - University of Alabama in Huntsville North
13 14 14 9 - 50 South 10 14 5 15 - 44
HALFTIME:
North 27-24
In the last two years, Cold Springs' point guard Georgia Myrex has put up an impressive resume in regards
to being on the winning side. Myrex has been a part of a 70-2 record as a sophomore and junior for the two-time state champion
Lady Eagles and has seen her team win 32 of 35 games during the summer camp session in 2008 and 2009. Now she can add
to that list of being a winner in the AHSAA North-South hoops classic in which the North has dominated by winning 11 of the
13 assignments. Myrex was inserted into the starting lineup for Team North and scored her only basket of the game at
the 4:45 mark of the opening quarter in which it tied the score at 4-4. Team North was ahead 13-10 following the first
8:00 but a bad start with reserve guards replacing Myrex and others for the North resulted in the South converting six turnovers
in a 2:00 span into a 10-0 run and 20-13 lead with 5:57 to play until halftime. Myrex was quickly back on the floor and
did her part to help the North battle back. The North went on a 17-4 run the rest of the stanza and never trailed for the
rest of the evening. Myrex had three rebounds and came up with a blocked shot during the second half that prevented an
easy opportunity for the South to score. "I saw the help was not there on the help side of the defense so I moved
over and blocked it," She said to Sportspage after the victory. The North led 41-29 at the end of the third period
and ran out to a 47-31 advantage with 5:00 remaining before the South closed with a 13-3 spurt to bring the dominated game
by the North to a respectable look as far as the scoreboard was concerned. Myrex was not aware of getting a starting
position she said until right before game time. The two-time state champion and Sportspage co-player of the year
with her teammate Paige Parker was delighted to be a part of this in which a good support of Cold Springs people came to "The
Rocket City" to see her perform with some of the best talent the North could put together. Tyrese Tanner of Hoover
led the North with 13 points on five of 10 shooting and was selected the team's Most Valuable Player. Courtney Strain
of Woodland, the all-time leading scorer in the history of the AHSAA, chipped in nine points. Strain has been the Class 2A
player of the year the last two seasons and has been selected in this award over Myrex. Myrex and Strain have developed a
good friendship and enjoyed the week together of mixing in baskteball with plenty of activities away from the hardwood. A moment that Myrex will treasure was after she came out of the locker room and was greeted by her coach Tammy West who
gave her a huge hug. Myrex followed the pattern of Paige Parker who played for the North last season and got them back
on the winning side after they were stunned by the South in the '07 encounter. Now Myrex will focus on her senior season
with the goal of a three-peat in 2A hoops standing in the back of her mind.
TEAM NORTH
TOPS THE SOUTH IN BOYS' BATTLE:
HUNTSVILLE – Decatur guard William Johnson turned in the kind of point guard performance coaches dream about.
He produced 13 points and was named the MVP for the North in a hard fought 7-72 victory over the South Thursday night in the
latest edition of the AHSAA All-Star Basketball game. Johnson was able to deliver from the foul line with the game on
the line, hitting five of five to seal victory. Johnson, who had three assists and no turnovers, sank two free throws with 54 seconds left for a 71-67 lead and fellow
guard Tyler Mosley of Talladega nailed three more in the final 34 seconds. The South
got one last chance when Kendal Jennings of Sparkman missed a dunk with his team leading 75-70 with 0.3 seconds left and was
called for hanging on the rim.
Neiko Hunter of Greene County, the South MVP with 18 points and five rebounds, sank two free throws to cut the lead
to 75-72. The inbounds pass and shot was just a fraction too late to tie the game, however. Jennings
finished with 12 points and four rebounds for the North, which now holds a 40-25 lead in the series. Mosley and Quintarius
Hutchison of Anniston added seven points each for the North. Jamal White of Monroe County added 10 points
for the South.
COLLEGE COACHES COME TO SEE THE

with players. But Division II coaches from the University of North Alabama and the University of West Alabama were there as
