New commander for the Fairview Aggies:
David Martin becomes the new leader of the Fairview Aggies, once it's approved during the next meeting of the Cullman County School Board.
Martin has replaced Branch Whitlock who coached the Aggies for one season, leading them to the 5A Northwest Regional semifinals. Martin is a Fairview graduate, who coached last season at Parkside School in Baileyton.
Martin becomes the third coach Fairview basketball has had in the past three years, following Eddie Groves and Whitlock.
Aggies end Hartselle's undefeated streak at the camp:
Hartselle had played well in the AHSAA officials' camp, entering its last game of the 3-day assignment with a 6-0 record.
But the Fairview Aggies were ready for the challenge and started strong, shooting well from the outside in building a 25-11 first half lead and up by the score of 45-35 with 12:00 remaining.
Hartselle then found its rhythm, cutting the deficit down to one inside the final minute. But five straight free throws made between Connor Tipton (3) and Luke Yarbrough (2) kept Fairview ahead.
Hartselle had a chance to tie, but Brody Peebles jumper in the lane bounced off the rim as time expired and Fairview triumphed 56-54. The Aggies claimed two close victories for coach Martin on Saturday, fighting off Boaz 37-33 in the Wallace Wellness Center, before a solid effort put them in win column with Hartselle.
A correctable error:
Something began that is uncommon for high school basketball. In the Fairview-Hartselle game, both teams started by shooting at the wrong goal. This went on for two and a half minutes when the officials noticed the error.
It was a correctable error in which the officials had the teams to change baskets and the score remained as it was. Fairview was ahead 6-4 when the Aggies went to the correct basket in the first half and would take the lead on into halftime.
Not everybody is here:
Falkville got caught shorthanded Saturday with a conflict. The ACT exam was being given in the area as Falkville had two people taking the exam, leaving them with six to go to battle against West Limestone in their first game. West Limestone jumped ahead early and went on to run by the depleted Blue Devils 54-27. Falkville would go to the Wellness Center after that and match up with future area opponent, the Meek Tigers in their final game of the day.
Other teams had similar situations with players unavailable due to the ACT exam this weekend for juniors and seniors.
Plenty of teams come to officials camp:
With the city of Hanceville hosting the AHSAA state basketball officials camp for the first time, a total of 43 varsity teams gathered in the three-day event.
Thirty-one were in the varsity division, with a dozen coming from girls' play. Cullman County was represented by Cullman, Cold Springs, Fairview, Good Hope, St. Bernard and the Cold Springs, Hanceville girls.
Teams that traveled a long distance include South Lamar, Fayette County, Jacksonville, Rogers, Red Bay and Duluth, Georgia and in girls, Collinsville, Vincent, Coosa Christian, Brilliant and Wilson.
The teams were invited by Wallace State coach John Meeks with the AHSAA handling the officials under coordinator Mark Jones and district directors.
Northwest Regional district director Bob Harris helped with his input to get the state to select Wallace as the site for 2018 and hopes it can make a return appearance in June of 2019.
