AHSAA Class 2A, Area 13 championship
At Fazi-Richard Athletic Center:
Falkville 23 10 6 7 3 - 49 (10-14)
St. Bernard 9 16 7 14 6 - 52 (15-6)
ST. BERNARD: Christian Peterson 15, Elijah Price 12, John Christian Rose 9, Caleb Guthrey 2, Gavin Whaley 6, Carson Holmes 6, David Kim 2.
FALKVILLE: Alex Fowler 18, Aaron Dove 8, Allen Vinson 9.
FLASH NOTES: St. Bernard coach Greg Boatright described it as a gut check by his Saints. A slow start and a fast beginning from Falkville had the Saints behind 23-9 in the first period and 31-13 early in the second period.
The Saints were able to weather the storm, especially with Christian Peterson picking up his fourth foul with less than 3:00 to go in the half.
St. Bernard got a huge three right before time ran out from Carson Holmes. The shot bounced up into the air after hitting the rim and went through that brought the Saints within striking distance, down 33-25 at the break.
Boatright played his cards right, keeping Peterson on the bench in the third quarter. St. Bernard's defense cut down on Falkville's three point shooting, allowing one in the period after the Blue Devils bombed six during the first period, four coming by Alex Fowler.
With Peterson on the court in the fourth period, the offense returned to St. Bernard's side. Peterson got seven in the fourth with Elijah Price scoring a three and two drives to the basket by John Christian Rose that became important.
The game was 46-46 at the end of regulation.
A free throw from Rose gave the Saints the lead at 47-46. A basket from close range by Price off an assist from Peterson pushed the advantage to 49-46.
Then Peterson dropped in two from the line with the Saints ahead 51-46 with less than 30 seconds to go in the overtime.
Falkville got an incredible three by Fowler that banked in with 4.9 seconds left to make it 51-49.
Price was able to execute an inbounds pass over the top of the Falkville defense to Peterson, who went deep for the throw. He was fouled with 2.6 left.
Peterson made the first to put the Saints up 52-49. He missed the second as a desperation shot by Aaron Dove missed at the buzzer.
The Saints had pulled off the miracle, getting their 15th win of the season and 10th in 12 games at the Fazi-Richard Athletic Center.
St. Bernard allowed Falkville 33 points through the opening half and 11 field goals. But from the third period through overtime, the Blue Devils only scored 16 points and connected on six field goals, getting two treys in that stretch.
The Saints, who were two of 10 at the line in the first half, adjusted by scoring six of 10 from the line in the final 20 minutes with Peterson hitting five out of six.
Rose was a factor in the overtime when he stole the ball from Fowler and made some other plays as well.
His contribution was a life saver for the Saints to continue into the postseason on campus for the next round.
