Coming into their invitational tournament with momentum from a 2A. Area 13 victory over Falkville on Thursday, St. Bernard was never able to continue the winning pattern.
The Lady Saints fell in Pool A to Vinemont and East Lawrence in straight sets, then got knocked out in the tournament part of the invitational, losing to Cleveland in the quarterfinals.
St. Bernard fell to Vinemont 25-20, 25-13. Then against East Lawrence, the Lady Saints held the early lead in both sets, but could not maintain a level of consistency.
East Lawrence rallied from a 9-1 deficit in the opening set to claim a 25-22 triumph then fought off a 4-0 deficit and swept the match by a 25-20 score.
Cleveland was able to control the match in the quarters, defeating the Lady Saints 25-16 and 25-10.
Despite not winning on Saturday, coach Tiffany Hinkle-Pope's squad did have moments with good serving from Macy Whaley, Emma Tafazoli and Ashley Duke vs. Vinemont. Whaley scored five points as the lead server with Duke getting three points on serve and Tafazoli three points.
Whaley put five points on the board early against East Lawrence and added three points to her scoring tally in game two. Duke delivered eight points in the match with Tafazoli converting three points and three kills.
Avy Whaley came out and played hard for the Lady Saints during the quarterfinal match with Cleveland. Whaley had five points on serve, Macy Whaley produced four kills in the march and Duke delivered four points on serve with an ace.
St. Bernard is back at the Fazi-Richard Athletic Center Monday for a 2A, Area 13 assignment with Tanner at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Saints are 1-1 in the area, looking to avenge a loss to the Lady Rattlers a couple of weeks ago.
