Three weeks remaining for local teams to deal with area games in the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA).
Going into the new week, four teams from the Sportspage coverage area are currently undefeated and in first place in their respective area.
Five others find themselves locked in ties for the top spot in their area, needing to win out in order to possibly get home court advantage for the area tournaments.
Area tournaments will be the week of February 5-10. Pairings for area tournament play will be set before January ends.
These are the current standings for each team in the Sportspage coverage area.
2A, Area 13:
(G) Cold Springs 3-0, Falkville 2-2, Winston Co 2-2, St. Bernard 0-3
Falkville 3-1, St. Bernard 2-1, Cold Springs 1-2, Winston Co 1-3
FLASH NOTES: Cold Springs Lady Eagles look to close out on top of the area, playing at St. Bernard Tuesday, hosting Falkville Friday and at home with St. Bernard on January 16.
St. Bernard and Falkville are even in the loss column and split the season series. St. Bernard gets Cold Springs at home Tuesday, visit Cold Springs January 16 and end area play at Winston County on the 25th. The Falkville-Cold Springs game Friday is very important for the Saints, if the Eagles can pull off the upset at Jesse George Gym.
3A, Area 11:
(G) Susan Moore 3-0, Locust Fork 3-0, Holly Pond 1-3, J.B. Pennington 0-3.
Holly Pond 4-0, Locust Fork 2-1, J.B. Pennington 1-2, Susan Moore 0-3.
FLASH NOTES: Susan Moore and Locust Fork will play this week to break the top spot in 3A, Area 11 girls.
Holly Pond has controlled the varsity side of the area, closing out the schedule this week with Pennington visiting Tuesday and Locust Fork coming to Felton Easterwood Gym on Friday.
3A, Area 12:
(G) Hanceville 4-0, Oakman 2-1, Carbon Hill 1-3, Vinemont 0-3
Hanceville 3-1, Carbon Hill 3-1, Oakman 1-3, Vinemont 0-3
FLASH NOTES: A chance for the Hanceville Lady Bulldogs to clinch the regular season area title, if the win at Oakman on Friday. A loss and the area could come down to a coin toss.
Hanceville lost to Carbon Hill 54-44 last Friday, creating a tie in the varsity. Bulldogs go to Oakman Friday and finish up with Vinemont at Lane Horton Gym on January 16.
4A, Area 10:
(G) Good Hope 2-1, Dora 2-1, Cordova 0-2
Cordova 2-0, Good Hope 1-2, Dora 1-2
FLASH NOTES: Good Hope Lady Raiders lost to Dora 45-39 last week that puts them up against the wall. They need a Cordova upset of Dora this week and to win at Cordova. Otherwise, they are looking at a coin toss with their chances of winning that at 50/50.
Cordova has home court for the varsity with a win Tuesday against Dora.
5A, Area 12:
(G) Fairview 3-0, Hayden 2-1, West Point 1-2, Curry 0-3
Fairview 2-1, West Point 2-1, Hayden 2-1, Curry 0-3
FLASH NOTES: Fairview Lady Aggies lock up home court by defeating Hayden on Tuesday at Joe Shults Gym.
The varsity is a three-way encounter. Hayden is at Fairview Tuesday, Hayden plays at West Point Friday. Fairview and West Point still have to play Curry and Hayden the following week to finish the area schedule.
6A, Area 14:
(G) Brewer 3-0, Cullman 3-1, Fort Payne 1-2, Albertville 0-4
Brewer 2-1, Fort Payne 2-1, Albertville 2-2, Cullman 1-3
FLASH NOTES: Cullman Lady Bearcats get Fort Payne and Brewer to visit the campus January 19 and 23. The Lady 'Cats can't afford a loss to Fort Payne, or the regular season area title will go to Brewer.
Brewer and Fort Payne still have to battle in the varsity while Cullman could be a spoiler if the Bearcats can defeat both teams in two weeks.
