FLASH NOTES: A busy day that began with the Good Hope Lady Raiders almost upsetting No. 6 Danville, ended with Hanceville getting the opportunity to break Holly Pond's undefeated streak since January and prevent the Broncos from a return trip to the regional championship game.
Hanceville and Holly Pond locked into a 14-14 tie after the opening quarter. The difference in the game wound up being the second as the Bulldogs outscored the Broncos 15-9 to gain a 29-23 halftime edge.
The two tossed in 36 points in the second half, with both scoring 20 in a furious fourth quarter.
Clutch plays by RJ Evans, Brendan Flanigan, Josh Stanley and Damien Johnson late in the contest proved to be enough for Hanceville to go up by 11 and hang on when Holly Pond got within four points before free throws from Flanigan was able to ice the biggest win of the season for Daniel Wakefield's squad.
Zeke McDonald tallied 14 for Hanceville, Evans scored 11, Raiden Morgan 10, Johnson had nine, Stanley eight, Fred Ellis three and Romeal Simmons two. The Bulldogs are now 19-8 on the season and have won six in a row.
Griffin Morris played his heart out in what was his final game in a Holly Pond uniform. Morris scored 24 points and was 11 of 12 from the line. Sophomore Kyler Chaney tossed in 16, Jake Harris seven, Tyler Boatright five, Zach Shaw three and McKinley Garrett four.
Holly Pond's free throw shooting kept the Broncos in the game. They were 18 of 23 in comparison to Hanceville going three of five.
But the Broncos suffered from the floor, shooting 19 of 64 and only three of 19 in three-point attempts.
Hanceville had 28 field goals to go in 59 shots and was six of 15 from long distance.
Hanceville comes back to the Coliseum Wednesday to face Lauderdale County who ran away from Elkmont 59-32 in the first semi.
Lauderdale improved to 22-9 with the victory, leading 32-14 at the half.
Buddy Burchell came off the bench for the Tigers (22-9) and led them with 17, scoring five times on threes and a field goal.
Good Hope Lady Raiders were in business, down just 21-19 to Danville after the first and 30-27 at the half.
But not scoring a field goal in the third was the difference with Danville going on a 12-2 spurt in the period to open up a 42-29 lead.
Erika Woodall had 13 in her final game in a Good Hope uniform with Leyton Seal scoring 12 on four treys and Kate Kent tossing in seven. Danville had a 17-point performance by Jolee Cole to lead them into the regional final vs. No. 1 Deshler.
