FLASH NOTES: Playing at home for the first time along with it being the opener in 5A, Area 13, West Point put together a gallant effort against Hayden, but was not able to knock off the Lady Wildcats as the match went into a tiebreaker and was seven minutes shy of being played for two hours.
Regina Jones' squad had many to lay it on the line Thursday night, especially pulling out two hard fought sets to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
West Point was ahead in the second set 24-20 and a chance to close out, but Hayden was a team that never surrendered. With Halee Reid aggressive on the frontline, she brought the Lady Wildcats back and the game entered sudden death with it tied at 25-25.
A call by the officials was first to be a point rewarded to Hayden, but then officials had a discussion and changed it, giving the Lady Warriors a point and a 26-25 lead. Lexi Shadix got off a good serve that was followed by a kill from Josie Huckaby to even the match at one win apiece.
West Point trailed 10-5 in the third game thanks to an ace from Reid. They stormed back on the strength of four straight service points by Shadix and a couple of points from Molly Pendley and assists by setter Selena Clark.
Neither team could get advantage and keep it. Hayden went up 26-25 on a serve by Siy Johnson. Then West Point broke service, by a kill from Pendley and the score was 26-26.
Pendley got a service point thanks to a tremendous kill from Mackenzie Carter and Pendley served the game winner that put the Lady Warriors in front two games to one.
Hayden never West Point stay in contention in the fourth set, taking a quick 11-4 lead and never pulling off the throttle.
That sent the match to a tiebreaking fifth set.
Reid was explosive at the net for Hayden, getting three straight kills to jump start her squad to a 7-3 lead.
West Point stayed calm and used points from Carter, a volley by Clark, a block from Huckaby and a kill by Carter from an assist by Clark and cut the margin to 13-12.
But a sloppy play from West Point set up a point by Hayden on a crosscourt kill from Bree Hogeland.
The Lady Wildcats ended the match with Reid's seventh kill in the set. Reid was consistent throughout the battle in leading her unit to their sixth win in eight decisions and 1-0 in 5A, Area 13.
Solid efforts were provided all evening for West Point from Clark, Carter, Pendley, Shadix, Gracie Thompson, Huckaby and Avery McClure. The Lady Warriors are 1-1 overall.
