FLASH NOTES: Blount County's champion encountered the Cullman County champion Monday, in a 5A, Area 12 assignment.
Through three innings, West Point kept it close, scoring twice in the third to get on the scoreboard against the current leader in Area 12, who is No. 2 in the 5A state prep poll.
West Point failed to score with the bases loaded in the first and second, but managed to change that in the third when centerfielder Avery McClure ripped a double into left center scoring Makayla Brown who singled and Braelee Quinn who walked.
But the inning was ended when Gracie Abbott was struck out by relief pitcher Savanna Painter. After three complete, Hayden held a 4-2 lead.
Taking advantage of opportunities, Hayden did so in extending the advantage. A two-out walk to Hannah Cox sent Gracie Benton to the plate. Benton ripped a pitch from Wilkins over the left field fence that made it a 6-2 game.
Hayden added a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth and broke it open on an eight-run seventh, collecting six hits in the frame, including a a two-run homer and a two-run double from Victoria Knighten.
Knighten was a spark for the Lady Wildcats, 26-6 and 4-0 in Area 12, going three for four with a double, home run and four runs batted in. Hayden had 14 hits in the seven-inning contest to six for West Point, now 0-3 in the area. The Lady Wildcats cracked three home runs, accounting for five runs batted in.
Ball singled for the Lady Warriors, Abbott and Molly Pendley had singles, Brown and Wilkins singled and McClure doubled.
