FLASH NOTES: Knowing the competition would be more of a challenge than it was Monday in a 62-31 rout of Guntersville, West Point stood up to it.
Getting a 55-52 win against Lawrence County Tuesday night with Lexi Shadix playing for the first time after she broke her left wrist in the fall. Shadix scored eight in a four-minute span and blocked a game tying three-point attempt in the final seconds.
With West Morgan, the Lady Warriors went in front 18-12 after the first before West Morgan tied the score at 26-26 with 3:38 left in the half on a trey by Haley Doston.
The rest of the half was controlled by West Point, despite shooting just 11 of 19 from the foul line after 16 minutes.
West Morgan got some momentum to start the third, closing the gap to 37-33. Then it was West Point with an 8-2 run in extending the lead to 45-35 at the 4:00 mark on a field goal by Brooke Brownfield.
The Lady Warriors shook off the challenge by the Lady Rebels and led 55-48 heading to the final stanza. Shadix came off the bench to score seven points in the third with Mackenzie Carter getting five and Brooke Brownfield four.
Early in the fourth, free throws by Miram Oldacre raised the West Point cushion to 57-49. A baseline jumper by Carter pushed the lead to 61-52 with 6:20 to go.
West Morgan suffered a big loss when starter Bailey Parrish fouled out with 6:10 to play in the game. Shadix made both free throws, then a steal and layup by Miriam Oldacre had the home team ahead 65-52 with 5:45 showing on the clock.
The largest lead was 67-52 on a jumper from Miriam Oldacre at the 5:20 mark. West Morgan started the final period with a 12-4 run that gave them breathing room against a solid ball club from the Trinity community in Morgan County.
Oldacre had a hot fourth, in which she scored a trey and West Point jumped to a 72-52 spread inside the game's final 5:00.
Scoring was very important for Richie Penn's Lady Warriors with nine to earn scoring honors in the final half.
Miriam Oldacre carried the team in the final quarter with with 11 points, four field goals and one trey.
West Point scored on four shots in the last period while the defense held West Morgan to three treys.
The Lady Warriors finished the game on a field goal by Molly Pendley off an assist from Kyler Hembree to move past the 80-point mark on the season for the first time.
