FLASH NOTES: West Point looked very well in the first quarter, was stunned in the third quarter and found momentum in the final stanza to turn a possible loss in 5A, Region 6 at home into a stunning victory.
Hunter Persall set the scene with a 90-yard kickoff return to open the fireworks as the Warriors ran for 127 yards in the first and held Corner to 30 yards offense. A 70-yard drive ended with a short run into the end zone for Persall and a 55-yard dash for another score allowed the running back to net 104 yards in just the first 12:00 of the game.
With about 5:00 to play in the half, the Warriors were well in control, it seemed, leading 28-0 on a 28-yard end around by Appling.
All of a sudden, Corner rose from the brink of the dead.
They marched 73 yards after the West Point TD to get on the scoreboard and got back possession when they recovered a fumbled punt at the Warriors' 38-yard line with 50 seconds remaining in the period. They needed just 30 seconds to reduce the margin to 28-14 and was ready to roll in the third quarter.
Corner opened the third with the ball at the West Point 49 and was in the end zone in a little over 2:00, closing the gap to 28-22.
The next two offensive plays for West Point resulted in fumbles that allowed the Yellow Jackets to start at the West Point 15 and 5. In 21 seconds, the Jackets were back in the end zone and on top for the first time at 36-28.
Following a 46-yard punt by Rodriguez, Corner was down at its 29. That was no problem with the Jackets moving 71 yards to finish the third scoring four times on four possessions and having a 139-33 advantage in offense at that time.
West Point was given good field position after a personal foul penalty forced Corner to kick from its 25, not the 40. The Warriors took the ball downfield and at 10:18 of the fourth, got the touchdown on a Jones plunge from the one to cut off the Jackets' run of momentum, trailing 42-35.
The Warriors forced a punt that had them pinned at their six. With Persall the primary target plus a 30-yard pass from Jones to Kolton Easterwood, West Point drove it to the end zone in about a minute and a half. Persall took it in from the two and the conversion from Rodriguez had the game evened at 42-42.
Corner continued to self implode. The Jackets threw an interception that Whitt Laney had, put the Warriors with the ball at their 47 with 5:51 to play. They used 5:01 to drive for the game winner as Persall blasted through the middle from the seven with 52 seconds to go. Rodriguez kicked his sixth extra point out of seven and the Warriors were ahead for the first time since the second quarter, leading 49-42.
The Jackets returned the kickoff 57 yards, setting up their final series at the West Point 33 with 41 seconds to play. Four straight plays lost five yards with Lara throwing three incompletions and being dropped for a five-yard loss on second down by Matt McDonald. Will Brown broke up a third down pass play with Skylar Bowers on coverage, knocking it out of the receivers' hands on fourth down inside the West Point 20.
West Point went to victory formation and enjoyed winning at home for the first time in 2017, getting its 100th victory on the home turf all time.
The Warriors amassed 444 yards of offense, 272 coming by the running of Persall who had four rushing TDs, plus the kick return for a score. Persall has been in the end zone eight times in the last three games for coach Don Farley.
West Point had 237 yards of offense by halftime and 207 in the second half. They outgained the Jackets 174 to 26 in the fourth quarter and netted 18 first downs.
Corner finished with 300 yards for the night, 135 in the first half and 165 in the second half. After scoring on their final two possessions of the second quarter and four straight series in the third period, the Jackets managed just one first down in the final quarter, six yards rushing and 20 passing.
West Point is now 9-1 all time vs. Corner with the Jackets 0-5 in games played at West Point Stadium.
The win keeps the Warriors in 3rd place in 5A, Region 6 after Mortimer Jordan topped Fairview 34-3 Friday. They are 3-0 with Hayden 2-0 in the area. Hayden was idle Friday night.
